What is a motion sensor?
2025-07-11
Motion sensors are integrated into electronic devices to detect motion within designated areas. In interconnected systems, these sensors can activate alarms or initiate task sequences in response to movements. They are widely used in industrial equipment, intelligent lighting devices, home or building controls, video game devices, and security systems.
There are several different types of motion sensors.
Passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors detect body temperature (infrared radiation). This type of motion sensor is most commonly used in interconnected systems such as home security and lighting. PIR is the default option for most consumer grade connected motion sensing applications, as it strikes a balance between cost, performance, and simplicity. PIR sensors have low cost, reliability, low power consumption, and are easy to integrate with Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi Fi, and Bluetooth devices.
Ultrasonic motion sensors emit high-frequency sound waves and measure their reflections to detect motion. This type of sensor is suitable for subtle or small movements. Other motion sensors include microwave sensors, which are similar to ultrasound but use microwave pulses to penetrate walls and objects, providing a wider coverage range. When higher sensitivity or range is required, specify the use of ultrasonic and microwave sensors. Dual technology sensors combine PIR with microwave or ultrasound to reduce false alarms.
The fault scanning sensor uses a mesh network of radio waves between nodes; They can detect movement through walls and obstacles.
Vibration sensors (accelerometers) sense the motion or vibration of objects or surfaces; These motion sensors are used for mobile devices and smart wearable devices.
Video based (computer vision) sensors use cameras and software to detect motion by analyzing image changes; They are usually used for monitoring.
Capacitive/proximity sensors detect changes in the electric field caused by nearby objects; These sensors are used for touch screens and some smart lighting systems.

W ü rth Elektronik's MEMS based compact sensor with 3-axis accelerometer and integrated gyroscope is used for applications that require free fall, wake-up, tapping, motion, tilt, and direction detection. The 2.5 x 3.0 x 0.86mm sensor, packaged in LGA, provides digital I ² C and SPI interfaces, as well as a FIFO buffer for storing output data. The application scope ranges from positioning and navigation solutions to automation, industrial equipment, IoT devices, robots, and drones.
Design Description
standard
Motion sensors, as independent components, have not been fully standardized, but they typically comply with industry-specific standards related to safety, performance, and interoperability.
Connectorization
Many motion sensors are connected to circuits through simple three wire connections, although connectors are typically used. The connectors used with motion sensors include JST connectors, screw terminals, wire terminals, and occasionally plugs.

ATTEND's M8 A-Code circular connector is designed for seamless integration with motion sensors in industrial automation systems. This series offers 3-pin, 4-pin, 5-pin, and 8-pin configurations, including straight and right angle male and female interfaces, and provides on-site installation, panel installation, and soldering termination options. These connectors are designed to support signal and low-power transmission, making them ideal for proximity sensors, encoders, and compact actuators.
Market and Applications
Consumer, Industrial, Military, and Aerospace
Motion sensors are widely used, including safety systems, industrial automation, vehicle sensing systems, and gaming equipment.

TE Connectivity's LUMAWISE motion sensor is designed specifically for streetlights. By dimming the lighting fixtures to 20% brightness to save energy while still being responsive to movement, and for safety and security reasons, adjusting the lighting fixtures to full brightness.
