From energy production to storage and supply, it is necessary to provide application specific products in the fields of connectivity, electronics, automation, and condition monitoring to ensure the right solution for any demanding project. Renewable energy is a future oriented technology, but it must be stored for optimal utilization.

 

With the use of renewable energy, storing it so that it can be called upon when needed has become increasingly important. For this reason, ESS (Energy Storage System) has emerged, which is composed of individual battery packs. The battery connector is crucial for connecting these battery packs together.

The battery connector provides a critical link between energy storage systems and energy harvesting technologies.

 

Whether it is a small household storage system or a large battery container, battery connectors should cover a wide range of applications, with smaller sizes having current capacities of 100 and 120 Amp, and medium-sized sizes having current capacities of 150 and 200 Amp (all of which are already available). Other options should be able to have a current capacity of up to 350Amp. These connectors are designed to manage voltages up to 1500 Vdc.

 

Characteristics of high-quality battery connectors

 

In terms of wiring, the cross-sectional area of the conductor is available from 16 mm ² to 50 mm ². In the near future, conductor cross-sections of 70 mm ² and 95 mm ² will also be provided.

 

In the mating section, there is a busbar that can easily connect the conductor to the equipment through cable lugs.

 

The battery connector should provide several key advantages for BESS applications:

 

High current carrying capacity: The design of the connector should be able to handle high currents, thereby achieving efficient energy transfer and reducing power loss.

Durable design: The connector design should be able to withstand harsh environmental conditions, ensuring its reliability and service life in demanding applications.

Easy to operate and safe: The connector should be easy to use and have a mechanism to prevent accidental disconnection, making maintenance and operation safer.

The contacts should be made of silver plated copper alloy and certified according to UL 4128 to ensure optimal electrical contact even after more than 100 mechanical connection and disconnection operations (no-load).

 

Color coding is important, such as the color coding of positive (orange) and negative (black) connections on connectors and mating busbars. This creates key visual effects for users that require establishing connections.

 

Both sides of the connector have been coded with key codes to reduce the possibility of user errors or inserting the wrong side into the mating busbar connection. This special key encoding allows the connector to be inserted in almost any direction, thereby avoiding unnecessary mechanical stress in the cable.

 

Secure the plug and socket of the locking mechanism. Considering the large amount of energy managed by the connector and the risk of catastrophic arc faults in the event of accidental disconnection under load, this mechanism is a fundamental safety feature. In addition, slight movement of the connector may reduce the contact area and generate hotspots, leading to BESS catching fire. This locking function can prevent these two situations from occurring and can be disconnected in a very practical way by pressing a button.
